Small sailing boats at Lymington marina

Why you need third party insurance

You may need third party boat insurance to allow you to get a licence for the UK’s inland waterways, to launch a boat or to keep a boat in a marina. Navigators & General’s Marine Third Party Liability Policy allows you to demonstrate that you have the minimum insurance required.

Inland waterways

British Waterways, the Environment Agency and the Broads Authority are the three major navigation authorities in charge of canals, estuaries, inland rivers and harbours in the UK.  Most boats wishing to cruise on the inland waterways network will need to be licensed with the appropriate authority and will require proof of third party insurance.

Slipways, marinas and boat yards

Before launching your boat, you may need to buy a licence or demonstrate that you have third party boat insurance to cover any damage that could potentially be caused whilst launching or navigating your boat.
